What is energy?
Energy can be described as the capacity for action and vigorous activity; the ability to do what it is you want to do. When you have enough energy you feel great and enjoy life and accomplishments, and when you don’t have enough energy you are tired, inactive, unproductive, and eventually depressed and unable to function. Energy is life.
Where does energy come from?
We consume energy in calories of foods, drinks, and food supplements. Our body is able to process and utilize some of these calories and convert them to usable energy for daily activities and maintenance of our lean body mass (muscles, organs, bones, ligaments, and tissues). We store the extra consumption of energy we don’t need or use in body fat at 9 calories per gram (approximately 3500 calories per pound). The main pathway for producing usable energy from these calories is a series of enzymatic reactions called the citric acid cycle or Krebs cycle. In this cycle, two-carbon organic units (from the breakdown of fats, carbohydrates, or proteins in the body) and oxygen from the air we breathe go in, and usable energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the bodies unit of energy, along with carbon dioxide and water are released.
How can I increase my energy?
The feeling of energy comes from the availability of ATP, not from the total amount of energy we physically have (stored energy in excessive body fat is somewhat inaccessible). You can increase the feeling of energy temporarily through use of the common synthetic chemicals in drinks, shots, or pharmaceuticals which may have serious side effects, through intake of high-glycemic beverages or foods which cause sharp blood sugar highs and the following crashes and consequent proliferation towards diabetes and obesity, or, preferably, you can activate and enhance the ability of your own body to produce usable energy by boosting metabolism and body fat oxidation and enabling the body to operate optimally on a continuous basis.
